Georgia on the Move: A New Law Makes Mobility a Right, Not a Luxury

For thousands of Georgians, freedom isn't just an idea—it's the ability to run at recess, walk a dog, or simply stand up without pain. Now, thanks to the So Every BODY Can Move (SEBCM) campaign, that freedom is becoming a reality for more people across the state. With a team of clinicians serving communities from Atlanta to Buford, Conyers, Gainesville, and Stockbridge, Ottobock Care is deeply rooted in Georgia. Our local presence fuels our passion for advocacy, as we see firsthand the transformative power of accessible mobility and are committed to fighting for our patients.

Georgia has officially joined a growing movement that’s proving mobility is more than medicine; it’s a fundamental part of life. This new law brings much-needed prosthetic and orthotic insurance reform to the state, making life-changing devices more accessible to the people who need them most.

This victory isn't an abstract win; it's a daily one. It means parents can walk alongside their kids without fear of falling. It means children can run, play, and simply be kids with the devices they need. And it means fewer families are forced to choose between medical bills and mobility.

A Movement Fueled by People, Not Just Policy

If you’ve ever stepped inside an Ottobock Care clinic, you know it’s not just about technology, it’s about people. Our clinicians cheer with you when you take your first confident steps and understand that movement means independence, joy, and connection.

Georgia is home to several Ottobock Care clinics, including longtime providers like ProCare that have served local communities for decades. Now part of our network, these clinics blend global innovation with local expertise, offering patients the very best in prosthetics and orthotics without losing the personal touch.

But as any clinician will tell you, even the best devices can't change lives if insurance won’t cover them. That’s why So Every BODY Can Move exists. The campaign fights to ensure insurance companies treat prosthetic and orthotic devices as essential healthcare, whether they are for everyday use, athletics, or simple daily tasks like showering.

Georgia Steps Up

Earlier this year, advocates, families, and clinicians filled the halls of the Georgia Capitol with one clear message: Movement matters.

For six-year-old Elliot, who lost his leg as a baby, this law isn’t about policy—it’s about the freedom to chase his friends across the playground at recess, laugh until his sides hurt, and simply be a kid. These stories made lawmakers stop, listen, and act.

On March 6, Georgia’s House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of the reform. By summer, the bill had cleared both chambers, and Georgia officially became one of the newest SEBCM states. The victory joins a growing list of successes stretching from coast to coast.

Why It Matters

Georgia’s reform is about more than coverage. It’s about fairness, dignity, and the recognition that mobility belongs to everyone.

  • Better Health Outcomes. Research shows that access to prosthetic and orthotic devices reduces falls, prevents costly secondary conditions, and keeps people active and healthy.

  • Stronger Families. Parents, kids, and veterans alike gain independence and confidence when they can move safely.

  • Thriving Communities. When people can participate fully—at work, in school, or on the field—everyone benefits.

As ProCare Ottobock Care's own Cristalei Polk, who helped co-lead the Georgia team, put it:

"It has been an honor to co-lead the So EveryBODY Can Move Georgia team. Never in a million years would I have dreamt about writing a bill and then witnessing Governor Kemp sign the bill all within 20 months. This is just the beginning of our Georgia patients having the access to the orthotics and prosthetics that they need to run, shower, and play."

The Bigger Picture

Georgia’s success is part of a nationwide wave. Already, 12 states have passed SEBCM-style laws, with the bold goal of reaching 28 states by the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles. This momentum matters because it changes lives in the present and sets a powerful precedent for the future.

"At Wiggle Your Toes, our mission has always been to help amputees not only recover but to reclaim their independence and thrive in every part of life," said Aaron Holm, Founder and Executive Director. "When organizers like So Every BODY Can Move team up with states like Georgia to ensure fair insurance coverage, it means fewer barriers and more opportunities for people to access the devices they need. That’s what this is all about—breaking down obstacles so every amputee has the chance to move forward with confidence, strength, and dignity.”

Looking Ahead

Georgia’s win is proof that when advocacy, innovation, and community come together, change is unstoppable. Ottobock Care will continue to be there on the ground, providing expertise and care. SEBCM will keep raising voices and amplifying stories. Every new law passed brings us closer to a future where insurance fairness isn’t a fight—it’s the standard.

Here’s to Georgia. Here’s to Elliot and his friends at recess. Here’s to the parents, veterans, and athletes who no longer have to fight for the right to move.

The future is moving fast. And it’s moving in the right direction.
